Welcome
Hello!
My hope is that this website can be the impetus for a new conversation about the spiritual nurture and soul care of children in both the 21st century church and our 21st century North American culture.
I am on a journey. I'm anxious to share the things I'm learning with you. But I'm also interested in what you think and what you are learning as you walk this path.
I'm excited to see who joins me on this path.
Ivy

I just recently saw your book, "Postmodern Children's Ministry" at the bookstore and bought it immediately. I haven't had a moment to read it yet but know by the comments on the back and the index that I have found a friend! I've already recommended it to others. Today I discovered your website and the "Emergent Village" website. Through my denomination I have become familiar with Doug Pagitt and Solomon's Porch. I read his book "Reimagining Spiritual Formation and it was a breath of fresh air. Brian McLaren's books have been that in recent years too. Now it is so wonderful to discover children's ministry leaders who are on this journey and contributing to the dialogue of the emerging church. I think I am on your path already. I appreciate the invitation to walk with you!
I thoroughly enjoyed "Postmodern Children's Ministry". Of all the postmodern info I've read, your statements describing the way our thinking is changing across generations & the potential effects on ministry were clear and simple. Your approach to children and your belief that the Word (and all that it says about our Living God) will stand on it's own across generations are both close to my heart. I found the beginning chapters prophetic and a bit scary and the implications for the church-at-large profound. I'm pleased that our pastor is hoping to read it. I'm hoping it will stimulate discussion at our church.
At this point we're a small church plant including kids in service. We've offered a craft activity during the sermon that ties into the scripture. Once the older kids met on the balcony to talk about the message. Our group has mixed opinions about keeping kids in worship.
You support keeping kids in worship. You also mention groups/activities specifically for kids. How have you designed the kid specific activities/classes/worship? Do you include kids in worship and have kid specific activities on Sunday mornings? Or do kids come back during the week?
Do you sponsor activities to reach out to "unchurched" kids? Or do you reach out to families or both?

Sorry it's taken me so long to answer your questions. We don't have kids in worship every Sunday - frankly it is still and experiment. When we do we very much try to create a worship experience that can appeal across generations which means that some of what we are used to in worship needs to be changed or modified for those Sundays (or perhaps as we include children more and more - rethought and reimagined) We always provide activities related to the sermon in the common area outside the worship space for those children who might get restless during the worship service.
Also, during our age-graded children's activities we are quite intentional about worshipping in age appropriate ways and teaching about the various aspects of worship the children will experience when they are in community worship.
At Solomon's porch, an emerging church in Minneapolis, the grade school age children leave the worship gathering for about 20 minutes during that time they particpate an activities around themes like service and hospitality sometimes making or doing activities that either enhance that evening's worship experience or the next week's.
